I signed up for a one-year membership at world gym. Initially I was paying on a monthly basis until a representative approached me and let me know that I could pay in full for the rest of my year and save money.

I asked if after my contract was up if I could continue my membership outside of contract because I was searching for a job and did not know how long I would be in the area. I was informed that this would not be a problem.

At the end of my year I went in and I spoke with the manager Tiffany because I was denied access to the gym. I did not expect that. At this point I told Tiffany about my issue and that I wanted to reestablish my account and pay monthly. We talked about my new job and I told her how important it was that I was just setting up a month-to-month membership. She typed up some things and her computer and we chatted for about five or six minutes and she set me up in the system and asked me to sign the electronic machine at the front desk.

No additional terms were discussed and I believed that I had been set a month-to-month membership outside of any binding contract.

I continued going to the gym for some time until I had to move out of the area . My partner and I adopted five kids and dealing with a family related illness as well as a new job, I could no longer stay in Desert Hot Springs and use the gym.

I called the gym to inform them that I would need to cancel my membership but I was unable to speak to the manager. I called in a second time and because she was still unavailable I could not cancel.

I decided to call corporate to inform them of my cancellation. Corporate suggested that I would have to go to the gym in person to cancel. I asked if I could confirm my account and cancel over the phone because I had no ability to go in person to the gym. The representative said there was nothing they could do and I would have to speak with a manager because I was in a one-year contract.

WHAT? This is the first time I learned that I was in a one-year contract and I could not cancel. Back when I verbally spoke with the manager I specifically explained to her that I wanted to set up a month-to-month membership as I had already been a member for a year. She did not tell me that was not possible. When she set me up she never explained any terms of a membership in fact I thought I was in a no contract month to month and she did not advise me differently.

Recently, I called and spoke with the manager Tiffany directly. I explained my situation. She reviewed my account and confirmed that she remembered setting me up. She also confirmed that I had called in to cancel over the course of three months three separate times. She also confirmed that I had not been to the gym for six months.

I asked her to pull up my membership but she said she could not find it and she was unaware of what kind of membership I had. I told her that although it seemed unfair I had an opportunity to pay off this balance through my employer If she could send me the statement via email. She said I would have to email her first with the information and then she would email me the statement. So I emailed her the information and she never sent me the statement. Because I was on a timeline for my employers recompensation program, I reached out to her on the last day asking if she could please send the statement. She said she would do it soon as she got in that morning. Still the statement never came in my email so I called her the day after and asked Tiffany if she had sent the statement yet? She told me she did send the statement and she would be right back after she checked...

Moments later the representative answered and said that she was busy. The representative said that Tiffany would call me back in 10 minutes. 10 minutes later I received a call from world gym however it was not the manager it was the same representative again.

She asked how she could help me... it was as though I had just started this process. She read my statement to me and told me the manager was too busy to talk with me. She also apologized about the email that I did not receive on Tiffany's behalf. The representative Joslin said it was an accident because the manager had sent it from her phone and that is why I did not receive it.

Today, way too late to submit the statement to my employer, I received an email from Tiffany asking if I could provide a fax number to send the statement to. What?

In this case I feel that World gym did not treat me well as a customer in any way. I had no way to review my terms online. I had no way to cancel online. After verbally being told I could sign up for a month-to-month I was signed up for a one-year contract. When I tried to cancel I was ignored I could not physically walk into the gym and cancel and there was no other options for me. I feel like World gym and Tiffany specifically did not take my situation into consideration or care about anything more than making money. Good businesses care
